PROJECT: SoYoOn! Zine (2023)
PROJ. OVERVIEW: A passion project in which musician So!YoOn!'s Spring 2023 feature in DEW magazine is transformed into a miniature fanzine.

BACKGROUND: So!YoOn! is a Korean singer, songwriter and guitarist who is part of the indie rock band SE SO NEON. In Spring 2023, she was featured as a model in DEW magazine. The art direction of her feature photoshoot is feminine and ethereal yet bold and daring. However, I felt that the current DEW editorial spreads had more potential to visually embody and elevate the spring So!YoOn! look.
PROCESS: As this fanzine would be photo dominant, I first began by selecting the photos from So!YoOn!'s feature based on what photos worked best sequentially to tell the story of the concept harmoniously and also what photos would compliment each other aesthetically. I also sought out any opportunities to play or expand on visual details within the photos to further bring the images to life.
EXECUTION: My design approach often used the images as a jumping off point and is reflective of early Y2K Japanese editorial fashion design specifically as that was my main source of inspiration with its unconventional typography, intricate borders, and use of simplified repeated geometrics. I worked to emulate the styles from that time while also injecting my own contemporary style as well to keep the designs modern and relevant.
